Real Yellowwood

Podocarpus Latifolius

Real Yellowwood (Podocarpus latifolius) is a majestic evergreen tree native to the southern regions of Africa, particularly found in forests along the eastern coast of South Africa and in parts of Swaziland. This tree is recognized for its straight, tall trunk and dense, conical crown, which can reach heights of up to 40 meters (about 130 feet). The leaves are dark green, leathery, and needle-like, arranged spirally along the branches, giving the tree a lush appearance. The Real Yellowwood produces small, inconspicuous flowers that develop into edible, fleshy fruits, attracting birds and other wildlife. The timber of Podocarpus latifolius is highly valued for its strength and durability, often used in furniture-making, flooring, and cabinetry. Additionally, the tree is significant in the cultural and ecological landscapes of southern Africa, being a protected species due to its slow growth and susceptibility to deforestation and habitat loss. As a result, conservation efforts are in place to ensure the survival of this iconic tree, which also plays a vital role in its native ecosystem by providing shelter and food for various animal species.
